USCIS Releases Updated E-Verify User Manuals

Recently, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released several newly revised E-Verify publications, including the two most popular E-Verify User Manuals, the Employer (M-775) and Federal Contractors (M-574).

After a quick review of E-Verify User Manual for Employers (M-775) and Federal Contractor (M-574), let’s take a look at some of the key changes.

Updates in this manual include guidance on determining the ‘Hire Date’ for E-Verify. As we previously reported, an employee’s Hire Date determines the timing requirements for when employers are expected to complete Section 2 of the Form I-9 and when to E-Verify. In addition to rearranging the order of some of the topics in the table of contents, the Employer manual also describes E-Verify’s new  Error Checking capabilities  such as the unexpired document requirement.

E-Verify User Manual for Federal Contractor (M-574):

Updates in this manual include guidance on the new E-Verify interface, new FAQs, and detailed instructions for federal contractors who are required to register for E-Verify as a result of the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) E-Verify clause in their contract.

If you visit the USCIS E-Verify publications website (here), you can easily identify and download the publications that have been updated since they now all have a “(September 2010)” revision date.  To download the M-775 or the M-574, you can also just click on the linked images above.

It’s worth noting that many of the changes described in the updated manuals are not yet mandatory for employers using E-Verify through a web services interface (most commonly associated with an electronic I-9 system). Web service developers have until December 2010 to add the required functionality from the June 2010 E-Verify redesign.
